golcar lily

1 Conversation

Golcar Lily is the name commonly given to the inhabitants of the village of Golcar near Huddersfield W.Yorks.

It is said that the name derives from a comment passed by the Methodist preacher Wesley when comparing the maidens of the village to their coarser complexioned cousins in the neighbouring village of Slaithwaite (pronounced slawit).
It is also said that it derives from the settling of Hugenot weavers who when expelled from their homeland for their religious belief settled here and adopted the 'Fleur de Lys' as their emblem
Finally it is claimed to be a refernce to the plant 'Convolulus' which used to grow in abundance in these parts.
