Exeter University Green Society
Created | Updated Oct 4, 2004
Greensoc has pursued campaigns as diverse as the provision of recycling facilities on campus, the use of locally sourced food in outlets at the University and the availability of environmentally related modules within the teaching departments. The society proposed and passed a Guild of Students motion which made it the official policy of the Guild (Exeter University’s Student Union) to support and campaign for the University to switch to renewable energy to power the campus.
The society also opposed the war in Iraq and was represented at the 2004 anti-Bush demonstration in London, protesting both against the war and the US government’s rejection of the Kyoto Protocol.
Greensoc hosts talks and informative events to raise the profile of ecological issues among students. Professor Rolston Holmes III, the world’s leading environmental ethicist and winner of the prestigious Templeton Prize delivered a seminar to the society on the challenges environmental ethics face, and was made an honorary member of the society.
Other political and campaigning groups on campus include Liberal Democrat Youth and Students, Labour Students, Conservative Future, Socialist Worker Student's Society, Socialist Students, Student Action for Refugees and Amnesty International. The Green Society has always been happy to work with other groups in the persuance of common goals.
