Galaxies

It's Dark in Space, Well Actually mostly it's not.

Actually, there is a large glowing cloud of material, the bright part of it is the glow of many luminous, new-born stars shining on the surrounding gas cloud that they collapsed from. The most important part of the Orion Nebula (yes, you guessed it) it is the part we can't see: the opaque Orion Molecular Cloud. This is a huge lump of very cold gas that has a total mass of about 2000 times the mass of our Sun. The gas from this cloud is slowly collapsing inward due to gravity of forming stars. Whenever a bright, new star is formed, its light evaporates the opaque gaseous "womb" it formed from, “like Swiss Cheese” allowing us to see in. These stellar siblings are dominated by a few very massive, very, very bright stars called the Trapezium, that’s made up of just a few stars, but it outshines all the rest of them combined. The majority of the glow from the gas in the nebula comes from light from the stars in the Trapezium. Maybe in a few hundred million years, there will be planets like the Earth forming around some of the new stars in the cluster, or maybe not.

But for Now.

A futuristic 'Dune-scape'.
Just past a small red rock on the edge of one of the spiral arms of M42 the galaxy in the Orion Nebula, there is an even smaller red rock and orbiting this is a even smaller station, mostly metallic, With a few naturally placed lumps of rock, that have found it to be an agreeable place to stick around, " for a rest, and to have a little nose at the stations inhabitants," on its long journey in to the nearest star, these lumps of rock are mostly made of, well rock mostly, but from time to time you can occasionally find things like, exotic crystals, or unusual objects with almost magical properties. O and not forgetting the occasional lump of gelatinous sludge with a passion for conversation. only from time to time, that is.

Due to the close proximity of the Stellar Nursery .

A crescent moonThings don’t always obey the common laws of physics. Up’s not always up, and it goes without saying, neither is down always down, lefts and rights have a long standing mutual agreement to change places at least twice a solar day, and once a week, to be on the same side together. Without notification to the inhabitants of the station, I might add. Added to this from time to time a few strange things float in and around, and about, which is also something that does not run the way you may be used to (time that is). Gravity changes three times a week as there are 3 very very big stars around. O and day and nigh are not, but are a sort of full on sunny day, for most of the night. But all in all, this adds to the unusually pleasant sense of confusion and chaos found around places where freedom from most of the laws of physics, rule. nuf said.
