Travel tips....city maps
Created | Updated Jan 28, 2002
My job forces me to travel a lot to major cities in other countries. When I arrive at these foreign locations, I sometimes find that I have forgotten to bring a handy dandy pocket map. Now I could spend an outrageous price for a map at one of the tourist traps that has a blotchy representation of the city and points out nothing but Hard Rock Cafes. Or I could wander aimlessly all day looking for the city information office*. However, after a few minutes of looking around and swearing under my breath, I start for the nearest McDonalds, which I have found directions for are most likely marked on several thousand telephone poles throughout the city. I may even be close enough to get a visual on the Golden Arches.
Why do I search out a Mickey Dees? Because almost every McDonalds I have been to in Europe had a display set up somewhere in the store with various pamphlets. In between the booklet describing the fat content of a large order of fries and the pamphlet explaining why the Big Mac is better than the Whopper, there is usually a map of that city. The maps are highly detailed*, designate points of interest and places to eat*. The map is pocket sized and free for the taking. So far, I have procured maps of Milan, London, Paris and Rome. I must mention that not all these restaurants have maps available. For instance, there must be over 200 Mickey D’s in Milan but only half provide maps. If anyone knows of any other cities that I have not listed here let me know. Happy travels.
