The Belize Barrier Reef lies on the Atlantic-Caribbean coast of Belize, and extends nearly 260km from the country's border with Mexico in the north, to Sapodilla Cayes near the Guatemalan border in the south. In the north the reef lies only 1km offshore but in the south it is as much as 40km from the mainland.
