Vegemite - uses : Joan Sutherland and Vegemite in New York
Created | Updated Jan 28, 2002
Vegemite was hard to come by in New York in those days and the only ready source was by post from Kraft in Canada and even then it was only available in very small jars. Because they were so small, we would order 2 dozen jars at a time and we had to collect the parcel from the Post Office. The day that we collected a parcel was also the day that we had booked to see "Tales of Hoffman" at the Met. We took our parcel of 24 jars with us to the Opera.
Tickets were very expensive and we could only afford second row standing room. Standing room was at the back of the Opera House and consisted of two rows of padded bars that you could lean against.
Unfortunately there were really tall people in the front row so my wife needed extra elevation to be able to see. Inspiration! We think we are the ONLY people ever to have watched Joan Sutherland sing in "Tales of Hoffman" at the Met whilst standing on 24 jars of Vegemite. I doubt that even Dame Joan Sutherland knows this. I am open to challenge.
