Salem, Virginia is a small city of about 25,000 people located in the Roanoke Valley of Southwest Virginia in the USA. Situated next to the larger city of Roanoke, it straddles the Roanoke River on its way to the Atlantic Ocean. Salem is the home of several small industries, most notably furniture makers and graduation cap and gown manufacturers.

It is also the home of the Salem Avalanche Class A minor league baseball team, and the Salem High School Spartans, known for their perennially victorious powerhouse football teams and championship marching band, the Pride of Salem.

Other highlights of the city include the Farmers' Market, the Salem Civic Center, the annual Salem Fair, and Roanoke College, a top regional liberal arts college.
