What deed is it I have done which has turned Cupid’s charms into wrath and angered him so that my Claudio has been struck with an arrow of iron? What deception has been performed on the eve of my nuptials which has turned our sweet love into bitter jealousy? I am living, yet not living on so many accounts that I am troubled in trying to work out whether I am banished to the land of the living dead or still under Atlas’ sky. I have been taunted by the red skinned devil. He makes light work of prodding me with cruel words and deeds. His mouth gapes to reveal a torrent of criticism and hatred flowing from his burning tongue. My mouth is filled with the mournful cries of a child yet I am not a child and these tears refuse to escape so that my soul is left uncomforted.
