You are correct, but you miss the main vital function Chesil Beach provides...
...it is a haven for all manner of sentient and semi-intelligent hypodermic needles, car parts, pieces of rust, seagull carcasses etc. etc. who have devised a game whereby they lie around and stab any children who walk along the beach.
It also stops Portland from floating away, although opinion is divided as to whether or not this is a good thing.
