Redruth, Cornwall, UK
Created | Updated Feb 3, 2004
Located somewhere near the centre of Cornwall is a town called Redruth, most probably named after the colour of a nearby river (the rivers redness is due to the tin in the ground). Once a prosperous mining town, these days Redruth is a…town.
Shopping and Leisure
At the centre of Redruth is Fore Street, a hub of commercial activity. Keen shoppers may want to stop by at Greens local newsagents or John Oliver, an emporium of music, literature and cinema. Should you wish to view the latest Hollywood blockbuster then I recommend a visit to The Regal Cinema (make sure you where old shoes, the sticky floor has a nasty habit of removing the soles). At the top of Fore Street is the legendary Jims Cash and Carry where you can buy anything that you may need – paint, fishing rods, washing up bowls, cheap toys – all are available.
If sport is your thing then you can watch the local rugby team (Redruth RFC, if you were wondering) at the Recreation Ground on Saturday afternoons. Should you want to “work out” try Carn Brea Leisure Centre just out of town in Pool (just hope the roof doesn’t blow off again).
Should you want a night out in Redruth then your best bet is one of the many pubs (the Red Lion and Tricky Dickies are both highly recommended) or the marvellous Twilight Zone (it’s best to carry some kind of blunt implement as protection). Your best bet for accommodation in Redruth is The Penventon Hotel (with 3 stars) or The Inn For All Seasons.
Local Events
Once a year (usually in May) Murdoch Day takes place. It is either a) a celebration of the achievements of inventor William Murdoch, who invented the gaslight, or b) a cynical attempt to compete with neighbouring Camborne’s Trevithick Day. Whatever the motives, there is usually a fair and some kind of parade. Talking of fairs, there is usually one every summer, but there are now proposals to build houses on the fair field.
As far as Christmas celebrations go, in 2003 Redruth had four whole strings of Christmas lights.
Services
Redruth has a train station near the centre of the town which has recently been done up, just don’t be put off by the staff. The buses are, generally, late. The police at the local station will be eager to help with any problems you have, as long as they’re between the hours of 9am and 5pm.
The Future
Redruth is town on the comeback. In 1994 the town had four burned down buildings. In 2004 only two are burnt out shells. With that kind of progress who knows where we will be in 2014? It is likely that Redruth will continue on as a small town where people live, but don’t work or shop in.
