Mount "Burni (Stormy) Bitoraj" in Croatia

1 Conversation

It is not a highest mountain in Croatia, it is not the steepest mountain in Croatia, but it can realy exhaust you well.

Bitoraj is 1.700 meters high. There is a lovely shelter (cottage) under the top of the mountain (some 100 m under the top). I have climbed to Bitoraj for four times with my friends from Scout Unit "Plavi pingvin" ("Blue penguin"), but only one time I was on the top of Bitoraj. I was that exhausted.

The voyage begins in village Vrata. You can come there with the train from Zagreb or Rijeka. From Vrata you must go on South and just before you left the village turn left (on East) and walk, walk, walk. If it is a nice and warm day you need some 4 hours to the top.

But, if you decide to go on Bitoraj in winter season, when there is some snow left (in February there was about 1 meter of snow left) you need 6-7 hours to the top.

Shelter is open whole year. It is a small cottage, of some 3x3 meters. It has one living-room and one bedroom for about 10-15 people. But, you can put some 30 people in cottage without problem.
In cottage you have only water (in winter you have ice :) so everything you need bring with you.

It is very nice trip in the summer so take a hike.
