Racine Meigs County Ohio (USA, North America)

Racine, Ohio is not an interesting place to visit, unless you like being bored.

This is a short run - down of its basic characteristics.

Population: somewhere between 730 and 1,000 people.

area: less than 10 square miles.

atomsphere: sleepy, dull country village.

major industry: farming.

shops (an almost complete list):
2 gas stations, a historic grocery store, 2 hardware stores, a beauty salon, 3 garages, an antique store, 1 bank, a movie rental/tanning parlor, and 1 restaurant.

Parks: Star Mill Park, founded on the site of a burnt-down mill that belonged to one of my ancestors.

schools: a high school and jr. high -- the grade school was condemned so the school board would build a consolidated grade school.

weather: typically Ohio -- hot summer, cold winter. No tornadoes because of the hills, but flooding is common.

inhabitants: Mostly people whose families were from the area. Only one famous person from the area -- Ambrose Bierce, the writer.

Crime and Traffic: Very little of either. No red lights, but the speed limit in "down town" is 20 MPH. The cops will pull people over for doing 23.

History: Morgan's Raid (US Civil War) went thru the village. Founded as Graham's Station but later changed to Racine (probably after the French playwrite.)

Tourism: Not much to do. During fall, there is the Fall Festival, but this is one day and there isn't much to do there recently.

Best places to hang out: Out of town. Drive to Athens up 33 and soak up the university atomsphere, because the latest anything in town stays open is 10 PM and that's a gas station. Athens has a theater run by the University and runs 2 shows a quarter. There is also a movie theater here. However, due to the sheer enormity of the crowds, please stay away during Halloween Weekend.

There is a drive in on Route 7 near Gallipolis , but this closes in mid Fall.

Follow the road signs or look for directions to Forked Run State Park for free swimming and picnicking.

getting around town: walk or drive. You can bicycle, but if you aren't in good shape the hills are awful.

where to stay and where to eat: Alledgedly, there is a bed and breakfast in Racine, but nobody knows where. There is a motel in Pomeroy on Route 7 near the cemetery and several restaurants there.

Best time to go: in fall for the foliage or Deer Hunting season. One can camp at Forked Run State Park I believe year round (you'll need camping supplies)

Best time to stay away: the rest of the year.

prices: kind of high as compared to urban areas. Gas is more expensive and so is the grocery store.
