Subud
Created | Updated Jan 14, 2004
Subud was founded by an Indonesian, Muhammad Subuh Sumohadiwidjojo, known as Bapak, who started receiving the Latihan early last century. The Subud organisation is made up of individual groups spread across the world, where members meet to do Latihan.
The Latihan is a very simple form of worship. Men and women do Latihan separately. The worshipers begin by sitting quietly for a quarter of an hour. They then stand, and one of them starts the Latihan by saying "begin". Individuals feel the Latihan as a cold vibration inside them, which causes them to move in a manner entirely individual to themselves, be it walking around, kneeling, dancing or singing. This carries on for half an hour, when the Latihan finishes. There are no priests or leaders in the Latihan; it is a direct contact between human beings a God.
Anyone can join Subud, but applicants must wait three months before they may participate in the Latihan, to show they have more than a passing interest. To find out more, contact your local group, or visit www.subud.org for information about what Subud is and how to find your local Subud group.
