Capricorn: the Goat
Created | Updated Mar 11, 2007
The Goat that symbolizes Capricorn was traditionally
depicted as half goat, half fish.
This complex dual nature is echoed in the Capricornian Personality, one of the most complex charecters in all the zodiac.
They have two distinct natures. one side of the sign is ambitious, hard working, and enterprising.
This Capricornian is highly motivated, loves life and is able to set high but achievable goals.
The other side of the Capricornian, however, is lost in a world of real or imagined obstacles to sucess; further, this Capricornian
often cannot find the motivationyp take action and challenge those obstacles.
Even sucessful Capricornians have the tendency to whine and complain about daily burdens.
These darker tendencies are not eased by Capricorns introverted natures and love of solitude.
The myth:
Capricorn, often symbolized as half man, half goat, was known in ancient astrological works as the Goat fish.
In Babylonia he was known as Ea, the god of knowledge, and was depicted as a man walking in a fish shaped coat, fish head, and tail.
He lived in an ocean in the Mesopotamian valley, from which he would rise up to share man with the gifts of his knowlege.
In ancient Greece. capricorn was the nature god pan. During one of the wars between the gods and the titans, typhon the fiercest of titans drove the gods into Eypt.
The only way for gods escap typhon's wrath was to change their shapes, Pan turned his upper body into a goat and his lower body into a fish, Then jumped into the River Nile and swam away, Zeus was impressed with the form that Pan invented that he immortalized it forever in the eight starred constellation Capricorn.
