Vegetarianism

Why is the assumption underlying vegetarianism always that you are making some sort of protest about the killing of animals for food???… I mean, sure, by all means, animal's cruelty is a terrible thing and must be stopped, but technically the killing of animals for food is not cruelty.

It's not cruelty as long as the killing is relatively painless and humane and that we kill no more animals than we need for food. Even as a vegetarian, one of my few beliefs is the food chain. It's there for a reason. Bigger animals kill smaller animals in order to survive. That's the way of the world. I think though, that the big mistake that humans have made when interpreting the food chain from nature, is the assumption that we are at the top.
