The Jacobite Rebellion

Post 1

Didn't the Highland clearances happen as a result of the Jacobite Rebellion, to destroy the power of the clans, rather than being a cause of it?

Not quite, after the battle of Culloden the speaking of gaelic, the wearing of kilts, or any tartan and the playing of the bagpipes was banned. Almost 100 years later the Clearances started, due in part to the potato famine in Ireland, spreading to the Highlands, but mainly due to landowners wanting grazing ground for their sheep. On the Isle of Ulva, just off the coast of the Isle of Mull, there is a place called Starvation Point, where all the crofters from Ulva tried to live after being evicted. The houses were dug into the ground and covered with a sod roof, to make them camoflaged from the baliff and his men. Unfortunatly they didn't make it (as the name suggest)
