Getting Around in Chicago,Public Transportation.
Created | Updated Feb 3, 2004
The public transportation system is fairly effecient. It consists of actually three systems. There is the intra-city rapid transit, the city and suburban bus lines, and the suburban to city train lines.
The rapid transit system has been improved greatly in the last twenty years or so. You can now get to and from both of the major airports using rapid transit. It can be a bit dauntig with a lot of baggage, but it is definitly managable. You can also get to just about any area in the city using rapid transit,as there are sevaral different lines that snake through the different sides of the city. You may not be able to get exactly where you need to go by ojnly using rapid transit, but there are bus lines that run tangent to the rapid trans that should be able to get you to within a block or so of your destination.
The bus lines in the city are basically laid out to run along the major streets and generally run every twenty minutes or so. You need to be aware that some buses only run during the day and evening hours, but that information is posted on the signs at the stops along each route. Whereever the buses run only day and evenings, there is a nearby route that runs twenty-four hours a day.
It is important to remember that Chicago is a thouroghly modern city, one shouldn't travel the public trans system alone late at night, there are predators! If you must travel alone late, always be alert, don't doze! Don't wear a lot of flashy jewelry, basically don't advertise yourself as a victim.
