MIDDLEMOUNT

Middlemount is a small mining town approximately two and a half hours north-east of Rockhampton in Central Queensland. The majority of people living here are connected in some way to the coal mines. Anyone else is here to service these people, apart from those who live on surrounding cattle properties. The town has a primary school and high school, half a dozen shops, tiny library, swimming pool, community centre, golf course, football fields, tennis courts etc., lots of parks and a hill (thus the name of the town). Big deal, it has a hill, you say. It is a big deal in this area of Queensland (Central Highlands). It's very FLAT! The people of Middlemount are very proud of their hill. It is the closest thing they have to a tourist attraction, and all visitors are dragged to the top to admire the view of cattle properties and mines. The locals use it for cardio-vascular exercise and "How far up the hill can you go?" is a measure of your fitness. If you have nowhere to go on a weekend, you can always go to the park up the hill and it is always a destination on any fun run, car rally or triathlon. Without it, Middlemount would truly not exist.
