A fascinating band called Broadcast, currently just about the hippest thing around. I struggled a bit over the review trying to find the words to describe what they do, because it really is highly unusual. They sound as though their main influence is Sixties film soundtracks and TV music - stuff like John Barry and Ennio Morricone. Their singer is a woman with a really icy, detached style of delivery. It's all very eerie and atmospheric, and not very rock'n'roll at all. But I'd been to a mindless metal gig on Saturday night, so I really enjoyed hearing something totally different.

I'm just really glad that I can pick and choose and go and check out a real variety of stuff. Do you get to see many live bands these days?

Fair enough. I certainly wouldn't go to anything like as many shows if I didn't get in free and get paid for writing about it. But, that said, I can honestly say that there are still quite a lot of bands around I would be willing to pay to see.
