Secret codes have obsessed people since the dawn of writing. It's bad enough when it's a matter of trying to crack a code which you know to exist, but there have always also been a large number of cabbalists, conspiracy-theorists and simple nutters who believe that even plain language texts with a clear and coherent meaning actually mean something else altogether, eg the Bible is all about the Pyramids, Shakespeare's sonnets contained hidden messages to Andy Pandy, Darwin was hiding messages from God in The Origin of Species and Noddy Goes to the Seaside is in fact a diabolist text advocating the overthrow of Western civilization by stealth. It's all part of the same magical thinking that regards books as offering the opportunity for divination, and it should be stamped out.
