Chapter Five
My eyes flicked open and reassured by my steady heartbeat I raised my silver horned head. My vision was blurry and all the noises around me buzzed in my head for a while. I tried to stand up but I was still weak from blood loss. Star’s friend, Sian, encouraged her to touch me. Star seemed reluctant but moved slowly towards me and placed her hand on my nose.
I felt such a powerful feeling sweep through my body. My vision returned, my hearing became normal and my strength returned. I got to my feet and she leapt back in surprise. I reached my full size. My wing span in my dragon form reaches up to twenty feet, my tail about half the length and my neck quarter of the length.
Her eyes glittered in fear and I could see my reflection in her eyes. I arced my neck and nudged her with my head careful not to hurt her. Sian laughed as Star slowly stroked my horns. Sian walked over and ran her hand across my chest to check for any permanent marks. Sian turned to Star in a blur of red hair and said, “Summon her back into your ring.”
Star closed her eyes and whispered the spell recently taught to her when she had read the book. I flowed back into the ring in a neat stream of red and purple energy. She looked down into the ring and I looked up at her. She was having a culture shock of some sort because shortly after she fainted.
I heard their conversation once Star had awoken and this is how it went:
Star: So explain this to me again.
Sian: Your ring contains the spirit of an ancient mage known as The Dragon.
Star: How can a ring have a spirit?
Sian: She locked herself away in it using a spell.
Star: That thing was a she?
Sian: That was her dragon form, The Garnet Dragon, anyway the spell she used locked her away in the crystal and only the wearer can summon her out.
Star: Why would she lock herself away like that?
Sian: To save the future of Great Britain, but I don’t know anymore than that. I only know what was passed down through the ages by my family... which is also how I know healing spells.
Star: How do we find out more?
Sian: Ask her.
At this moment I was summoned out of the ring. Standing on two legs. I took the form of Star as I did with everyone who had summoned me in the past. This was because I’d lost my identity. The only memories I had of my past were of my arch rival, vague memories of Merlin and very few memories of the wars I had to fight. I didn’t even know my own name, so these past years I dubbed myself The Dragon.
Sian was the first to speak to my translucent body, “Why do you look like Star?”
My voice was low and had such a soft accent it sounded as though I had none it was also eerie and sounded unreal, ghostly. I spoke to them, “It is through no fault of mine that I take your identity Star, it is only because I have none of my own.”
“What do you mean? Everybody has an identity.” said Star staring at me.
“I have lost mine over the years. Spending so many years in a ring being summoned only for power and cruelty has made me lose my purpose. I can’t remember my family, friends or history.” I said looking at the floor.
Star looked at the floor and said to me, “We’ll get you identity back. I promise.”
“Hang on, we? When did I get involved?” asked Sian.
Star ignored her, “You can trust us.”
“Thank you my young friends.” I said smiling.
“There you go again: us.” said Sian before folding her arms and sulking.
