Salem, Virginia is a small city of about 25,000 people located in the Roanoke Valley of Southwest Virginia. Situated next to larger Roanoke, it straddles the Roanoke River on it's way to the Atlantic Ocean. Salem is the home of several small industries, including furniture and graduation caps and gowns. It is the home of the Salem Avalanche, a class A minor league baseball team. Salem is also home of the Salem High School Spartans, known for their perenially powerhouse football teams and championship marching band, the Pride of Salem. Other highlights of Salem include the Farmer's Market, the Salem Civic Center, the annual Salem Fair, and Roanoke College , a top regional liberal arts college.
