Fungi

1 Conversation

Autumn is my favorite time of year, and there is nothing better than going into the countryside to look for mushrooms. These wonderful, mysterious, colourful and infinitely variable plants (are they really plants?) have fantastic names like: the Charcoal Burner, Shaggy Parasol, Destroying Angel and Fairy's Clubs.

They are associated with magic and legend. Reindeer get high on the halucinogenic "Fly Agaric" and are seen to leap around, possibly giving rise to the story of Santa's flying reindeer.
Men in the far north are said to have got their wives to eat the Fly Agaric and then drank their urine, so the men avoided the harmful poisons in the mushroom, their wives were not so fortunate!

Many fungi are wonderful to eat, but take great care and go with an expert and a good guide book. Better still go on an organised foray at a local nature reserve.
