South Bank Centre. London

Nestled next to the Millenium Eye, on the south bank of the Thames, and consisting largely of hideous Modernist architecture, the SBC consists of a bewildering variety of venues hosting everything from Beethoven to John Peel via strange new contemporary dance and theatre. Excellent coffee and terrible food, and wonderful riverside views that take your breath away- or is it the carbon monoxide?

More here.

Students and other impoverished hitchhikers can pick up cheap tickets for most things on the day, and the variety is huge. Also a very good place to pick up work: decent pay, fluffy as they come, full of out-of-work actors and musicians, and you get all the free concert tickets you can eat.

Watch out for bizarre outdoor events, flying skateboarders, and kamikaze pigeons.
