Bristol is a city in the south-west of England with a population in 1999 of around 400 thousand people.
It was historically a large port although now it supports many industries, including
many hi-tech companies. Bristolians are proud of their heritage as the port from which
John Cabot set sail to discover Newfoundland, and ashamed of their heritage as a large
slave trading port. The centre of Bristol was bombed during the war and is ugly in places, but the
Victorian architecture in Clifton, Redland and other areas is very beautiful.
Bristol is also home of many balloon manufacturers and has an annual baloon festival to celebrate this.
Bristol is also the largest city in Britain not to have a top-flight football club.
