Tai Chi is often perceived as some vaguely mystical slow dance that originated in China. In reality it is a lot more:-

Tai chi started out as a fighting system, and there are many schools that still teach it as such. It uses good body mechanics and muscle control to develop and absorb power. This efficiency proved to be beneficial to the health of the martial artists. Over time the health aspects of the art become more popular than the martial ones.

If you want to learn Tai Chi, first decide why and find a school to suit your aim. I'll post a web link to a good site when I find it.
