when a site (web, ftp, whatever) is mentioned on the /. website (slashdot.org)
As this website is populated by thousands of well-connected nerds, they instantly
attempt to visit the page in question, thus overloading it and crashing the system.
The /. effect has been known to bring down huge multinationals (for upwards
of a second or so) by the power of curiosity. Hohum.
