could someone explain the workings of java chat? as far as chatrooms go, I think they're the best, but at what cost, are you secure in such enviornments? does h2g2 have an actual chat room, and if so,(check out the new guy, haw-haw) where?

Hmmm... I don't know anything about Java chat, but it's possible that it's quite secure... it's also possible that it's not. However. This isn't why I posted; the reason is that I can give a definite answer to your other question - there are no chat rooms on H2G2.com yet. You can, however, click a link on the front page (scroll down a lot) to see which other users are logged on at the same time of you... and in theory you could go to their homepage and wait until they posted a message, then post a followup, and they might notice it and you could start talking pretty much in real-time...
Hopefully there'll be a chat system at some point, but I'm not sure if one is planned... a good place to go for such information is www/h2g2/com/U1 - that is, the page of User Number One... he seems a pretty knowledgable chap.

That's not -exactly- correct, unless MM has removed the java client from his little corner of h2g2. (Yes, it's run from another site, but the client is here. )
PS: MM = MadMunk (use the search)

I was there soon after, it's a very good idea, although, I spelt your name wrong in the search, (sorry!) I still found it, however, thanks for the tips, I'll be sure to pop in once and a while!*S* I wouldn't mind a chat about this place, I've only been aimlessly looking around for a few days, but it seems to have potential, and a , je ne se pas?
no? *S*

The thing I dislike most about java clients is they take up so many resources... and I'm usually running on empty as it is.

I don't know if they are, but if you have icq, you know your homepage com centre blah, is that a java ...thing, er, program that they use for your chatting? I don't know about resources, but they do get jammed up, but it has to be better that the eh, usual posting, eh bbs crap though, you can have, like as close to a conversation as it gets now, well, I'm probably way off, but is the actual icq chat java too?

I have no idea what the new versions are written in.
I suppose I should point out here, for anyone who doesn't already know it, that Java and JavaScript are NOT at all the same animal.
(Strange that the simplest Java instructional text I've so far seen is "How to Program Java" by Peter Coffee. No, this is not a joke. )
