It is completely true that recommending an individual MUD will often be fruitless, even pointless... but I'm going to do it anyway.
Go to www.cardea-rpg.com, and play what is definitely an ace MUD. Roleplaying is enforced - so no discussions about yesterday's football match, okay? Other than that... have fun. And be nice to a certain Journeyman Tycheros Dynamis, the Mage - 'cause that's me.
As for being geeky... *shrug*... I'm not saying anything. However, you can meet a lot of interesting people - many of them intelligent, thoughtful and just plain nice. One thing, though - if someone *is* nasty to you on a MUD such as Cardea, consider before you respond whether they're being nasty because they're roleplaying an evil person - 'cause that's allowed. If they're being nasty 'cause they're just like like - well, it's frowned upon.
Anyhow, I've lapsed into waffling - so I'll shut up. I will say, however, that you might want to put MUD in the search - amongst other things, you'll find the page that I submitted (and am still working on, in fact...)

You can find roleplaying enforced MUDs where you don't have to pay to play too.
Try Threshold MUD @ http://www.threshold-rpg.com/ for instance.
A nice world to play in, not to big... easy to understand and friendly people.
Chers,

You don't actually have to pay to play on Cardea... you just *can* pay to advance quicker in the skills for a while.
I would try out Threshold MUD... but I already spend too much time playing Cardea MUD... I can't afford to double my phone bill .
