To quote The Encyclopedia Galactica, a freak1 is "an oddity of nature", but that doesn't go anywhere near explaining the real meaning behind the word.
A Freak is a person who will be his/herself no matter what is in, what their friends are doing, or what the name of the current president is. A Freak is not necessarily a person who stands out, though in most cases they do. Most Freaks can blend in quite well with other people. They just don't let anyone influence them very much. Not being influenced easily is the main thing that will set a Freak apart. That and the fact that they are usually smarter than everyone around them. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that you're not smart if you're not a Freak, it just happens to be a trait that applies to most Freaks.
Often "normal" people who have no outstanding features whatsoever will call those who possess something they do not "Freaks" meaning it in some derogatory way, but this is only a sign of jealousy, or perhaps fear of something or someone they don't understand. Often the so-named Freak will agree to the term whole-heartedly, while the accuser will beam out a triumphant smile to his/her friends to show that they think they won the contest. They couldn't be more wrong.
Freaks are those who end up changing the world, be it for better or worse, as the people who strive for nothing but to "fit in" have trouble making any impact on the world whatsoever. Sure some Freaks look a little weird, and act a little strange, but they don't see any reason why they shouldn't, and neither should you.
