Nihilism

0 Conversations

Nihilism is the belief in. . . nothing. This is not to say that that nihilists don't have beliefs, but instead that they believe that behind it all is nothing. There is no point to anything. No reason to prefer good over evil, or evil over good. There is no point to prefer truth over falsity, or falsity over truth. As far as -isms go, nihilism strikes most folks as a real kick in the gut. Surprisingly, nihilism can sometimes be funny and is used to humourous effect by writers such as Kurt Vonnegut, and, (dare I say?) Douglas Adams. In its more light-hearted guises, nihilism is closely associated with absurdism: the belief that everything is. . .you guessed it. . .absurd.
