Eyes Wide Shut

This is not a film for everyone, and probably not a movie that one would watch for the fun of it. without going into specifics (i'm not going to tell you everything that happens, or even much of it, as it would ruin the film, and I hate it when people do that), this film would classify as soft porn, and is intended to confront. Kubric creates dilemmas, and breaks quite a few rules of cinimatography (of course), leaving this viewer having very few clues about what was going to happen next. Although the first shot is of a naked Nicole Kidman, and the last her uttering a profanity, this story centers on the Tom Cruise charictor, and his search for fulfilment, taking him to many different and bloody weired places. The film holds you, even the light relief (what little of it there is) pulls you into it. The charictors are well cast, and utterly believable in the oft improbable scenario. If you are looking for a light night out, you won't find it here, but although this is a well made film, and sets up some intresting dillemas, it is not as thought prevoking as some of the other similar style films of recent times, such as The Thin Red Line, and the re-shot version of Lolita. The film is a good one, but I don't predict that it will be a huge money spiner, nor will it be the definative Stanly Kubric film.
