A large expanse of green on the way down to Southampton. Follow 'The Avenue and you can not miss it, where when I was a boy spent many an hour saling my model yatch on the pond that was in the Common. Or watching the samll power boats, racing round and around on a larger pond (lake?) further in the Common. When I was even smaller spent many hours in the paddeling pool near the 'Cowherds' pub. A visit to the zoo was also called for if you went to the Common. Often the Fair would visit the Common, and Billy Smart's Cicus as well.
Later had a few drinks in the Cowherds, which used to be a good place to meet up before a game at the Dell. I uderstand in later years it became the meeting place for 'away' fans. In my day it was 'home' fans.
Not much more to add on the Common, as it is a very large area, and even though I walked over some of it as a child, never explored the whole. So if anyone has please add on to this
