What about the great Aussie term "Bugger" ??? It'd have to be the most commonly used and internationally misunderstood word around.

Well I'll be buggered! (astounded) To misunderstand that word you'd have to be a silly bugger (person, in a semi-endearing sense) - I mean, is simple comprehension so buggered up (non-functional) that a simple word like "bugger" can be misconstrued? Bugger Off! (go away)

On reading in the paper that two men had been convicted of b*****y, the aged mother of a friend of mine commented on the declinig standards of literacy in the press, and noted that they had mis-spelt "burglary."
