The Mid-West

Imagine a map of the continental US (and, indeed, what a lovely map you have imagined! Very intricate, I'm quite proud.). Now, draw a line down the middle. It would make sense to call everything to the west of that line the "West" and everything to the east of that line "East". Find the middle of the half we're calling "West". It would make sense to call the states along this line the "Mid-West". These states are not the American "Mid-West". Draw another line down the middle of the half we're calling "East". Along this line lie the states Americans consider the "Mid-West". This does not make sense, but, then again, neither do many (if not most) Americans.
