There is an real solution to the world pollution problem. The best part is it uses existing technology and requires no new infrastructure.
Birth control, be it pills or vascectomies. Fewer people, less pollution. Well, the manufacture of vascectomy instruments, does pollute a little, but much of it, the scalpels and needles, can be used many times. I'm not sure about the ecological consequences of making birth control pills, but I doubt it is as much as building dams or wind-power generators.
