Magical Muse: the Incantation
Created | Updated Aug 22, 2004
An incantation is the ‘written or recited formula of words designed to produce a particular effect1’. It is often used to perform magical spells, but nowhere is an incantation more effective than in the magical productions of story telling. Book length incantations create and sustain marvellous worlds within the reader's mind. In the hands of a master magician, a book length incantation will excite and uplift the reader, conjuring the most vivid virtual reality in which to revel.
In a book it is possible to explore many different realities and experiences in complete safety. Only when a reader is enthralled, spellbound, is there danger; it is a danger in which the reader prefers to live in the story rather than face the reality of life.
A good story is a thorough-going enjoyment that fades slowly. It is a relaxation. A welcome escape. An intimacy between Author and Reader. A special relationship that can arise and endure across time and space.
