Since it seems to be agreed for the most part that the riots in which protesters were shot were not about the Newsweak story (pun intended) might we speculate that the entire episode in the press in the United States is more likely another attempt by the administration to undermine the credibility of the media? Another attempt by Karl Rove and his minions to persuade people to shoot the messenger?

Yes.

And since the principal news sources in the U.S. continue to promolgate the lie, the supression of the facts is largely successful.
