~*~I read something yesterday, comparing him to Ronald Reagan. Not in terms of policy, but in presentation. The gist of the (now forgotten) article was that Reagan was all folksy and down-home deliberately, so people would take their impressions of him from that and not the radical policies he was putting in place.~*~
Preposterous. Ronald Reagan acted the exact same way when he was an actor and after his presidency. It wouldn't make any sense for him to "pretend" at those points.

Iago, you weren't hearing things, but it wasn't Obama. I watched the whole thing, and it was the commentator, while the camera was on Obama, who mentioned that the priest (?) conducting the prayers was a vocal opponent of gay partnership ceremonies, and also anti-abortion.

Rev Rick Warren...not a particularly liberal person.

Hopefully, Obama's choice of him is just to keep the nutters quiet for a bit.

Good to see Obama picking the relatively low hanging fruit of rationalism early on:
"Obama has lifted a ban on federal funding for foreign family planning agencies that promote or give information about abortion."

Bet that's p1ssed of Rick Warren!
He is also closing Guantánamo, giving stem cell research funding again, out of Iraq in 18months or so(still difficult situation there though).
Next, hopefully, the Patriot Act will go.
Many things that have been said recently about the Bush era has shown just how extreme that administration was and how easy it is to reverse many of these things.

I'd love to know what the *secret* note said that W left for Obama in the oval office. Probably something like *Don't mess with Texas or Texans* or something equally goofy. Maybe even a threat if he did meddle with Bush's legislative orders.

Could have been something sinister like

An interesting factet from a friend in the US: Transcribed striaght from e-mail:
'A cool unintended result of him being the pres is that black folks seem to have suddenly come to the decision that calling each other 'n*gg*r' is no longer acceptable behavior. They're calling each other president instead! That tickled the heck out of me, seems it's a rapidly spreading phenomenon.'
If this is the case then it's a great thing to hear and hopefully give the black folks the feeling that they can strive to do more. The feeling from many black people is that Obama will not necessarily hand stuff on a plate to them but they *can* do things to help themselves etc. Like in any society there will be people who can't be bothered but if there are at least some who are in deprived nieghbourhoods etc but suddenly realise they hav the capacity to use their intelligence and skills to get out of the rut they are stuck in (let's not dwell on who put them there - let's view the future) then once some start and others see the results we can hope things can turn round for black people. Not the best of times to try though with current climate which is a damn shame though.
But it's a positive outcome.

Glad they didn't show Obama with his two normal eyes shut...it would remind me too much of Bernard Bresslaw in Krull.
