How holistic can economics be?

The problem is that I don't believe corporations should deliver a profit at all costs, why is that their goal? There goal should be multifaceted, not single minded.

Sure, but that is a political question not an economic one.
And I'm not at all convinced that changing the law regarding fiduciary duty would be successful. Regulation can't change motives!
But regulation can say that x,y,z are 'bad things' you may not do even if it makes a profit. To be really effective, such regulations have to be international, and that is a problem; because governments a) don't agree, and b) are overly influenced by corporate interests.
It is not widely known that Adam Smith warned against allowing businessmen to advise on or suggest legislation: they would suggest ways to increase their profits at public expense. And they do. So we have to keep a close eye on our governments and expose this sort of corruption when we see it. As we always did.
And I think it means we have to support, in principle at least, institutions for international pooling of sovereignty, like the EU, and one day perhaps the UN.
