Gunther Grass and the SS (German centric!)

Do we really need more education about WWII? It was a long time ago, and there were a lot of nasty wars in that century.

Well, Otto, he does sort of set himself up as a moral compass, though. So he can expect flak.
For me? I don't particularly care, one way or the other. I'm quite fed up of seeing him on the papers.

Well, just because of his past doesn't mean that he shouldn't be believed. If he had announced earlier in his life that he had enrolled in the SS, maybe people wouldn't have wanted to listen to him at all no matter what he said. Or they would have listened but tried to interpret everything through the filter of his past.
If I'm not mistaken that's what Otto described in A800425 as the 'hypocrisy fallacy'.

I agree with you Toy Box, I can imagine that these were the reasons for his silence. And let's be honest, did the pope tell people that he was in HJ or something ? Did the bishops who elected him know ? And id so, did they care ?

good points both.
It's still annoying though. Like those politicians who are always blithering along about how family friendly etc. They often turn out to like families so much they have two.
