it would seem that fantasy is a whole new world - i have always thought that fantasy was kids books - alice - harry potter etc but i have discovered that adult fantasy is a whole different genre and really jasper fforde is only fantasy in the respect that its not a real world - i cant explain it very well as its not something i have ever looked at but if you go to reefgirl's ps and follow her link you will see what others mean by fantasy

Pratchett too while largely aiming for an all-inclusive audience (8 to 80 as they used to say) does often hide quite 'Adult' themes in his books - the nature of crime / philosophy and such. Allthough one of his weaker books, in my opinion, due to the less than funny subjects tackled - religious reform schools (A la Sisters of Mary Magdalene), intolerance and near-feudal warring (Not unlike the situation in the Balkans) - he does raise points and questions that stick in ones mind, and all in a witty and easily read style.

See books like that don't really appeal to me but I am going to try jasper Fforde cos he sounds different entirely.

Hey Ditz - Yeh I'm smiley - cool...I think you'll like TP, most of his books aren't too dark and sinister, a notable exception is parts of Nightwatch - 'Life, Liberty, Reasonably Priced Love and a Hard Boiled Egg' smiley - winkeye - and watch out for his footnote gags - one of JF's tricks too...
