One of my earliest recollections was the china cabinet swaying perilously and my mother grabbing me and hiding under the kitchen table. It was 1957 and Derby was hit by a tremour measuring 5.3 and the aftershock the next day was 4.2. A crack almost 6 inches wide opened up in our front path.
