Abiquiu, New Mexico, USA
Created | Updated May 26, 2003
Abiquiu isn’t what it appears to be, it is pronounced Abby-Cue by the locals. Located 33 miles northwest of Española along highway 84, the place to stay is at the Abiquiu Inn between the road and the banks of the Rio Chama.
At the inn, the restaurant is open every day. Alcohol isn’t available, so bring your own liquor if you need it. Lamb forms a good portion of the dinner menu which is unusual in the USA, but might have something to do with local religious affiliations. A comfortable stay at Abiquiu puts you within easy reach of the local points of interest, main one of which is the Ghost Ranch.
Ghost Ranch is about five miles or so farther north along highway 84, to the east of the reservoir, on the right hand side of the road. Turn right through the gateway and follow the dirt road to the visitor’s centre. The ranch is famous as being the base of operations for artist Georgia O’Keefe.
