The Restraunt at the End of the Universe

In his book War of the Worlds, Jules Verne never made some remarkably astute predictions about the size and mass of a lunar vehicle. This was mostly because the book was written by Mark Twain and had no input from any other authors of the period.

However, since they have been dead a long time and their works are out of copy right you can and I do say what I like about them.

In his Life on the Mississippi for instance HG Wells made some remarkable prophesies about memory discs. It is with a little trepidation and a lot of research terpitude that I make mention of 'were Dougie's comparison of Mutually Assured Destruction and the ultimate War of the Worlds.

The death of the universe is brought about by the computer: Hactar. There is some doubt that the initial interference in the Great Experiment was his but there is no doubt that the supply of human sacrifices which most see as an attempt to thwart the GE, was in fact a final solution of another sort.

The fact is, the people who supplied the original computer eventually supplied the soft copy that produced the Ultimate Fielder: Arthur Dent. He of the enormous statue and delusions of normality.

He is portrayed as a mostly harmless loser, wondering probabilities in a never ending search for a cup of tea. He is in fact, the secret weapon of a computer the size of a planet, itself designed by a computer the size of a city.

There is too another secret weapon in the ultimate fight against evil, Marvin is a mole. Subverted from his role as a spare part in a cricket match he is allowed to run riot in the machinations of the heart of Cricket and in so doing brings about the first realised Strategic Arms Limitations talks.

Meanwhile in the Restraunt at the End of the Universe, Arthur doesn't get a decent cuppa. Or does he?

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
