Great Sporting Achievements

I feel that the list of great achievements needs to have the inclusion of Eddie the eagle Edwards who has succeeded in becoming a household name but virtue of appealing to the hearts and minds of the British public as a glorious failure. It's the taking part that counts obviously and you need more than a tad of bottle to go down a big Ski jump hill repeatedly. Particularly if there's a good chance of landing chin first as in the Eagle's case.
He also aptly illustrates the tabloid's obsession with alliteration which presumably saved him from becoming Eddie the Vulture or spread eagle which would seem to have been more appropriate to me. In fact, come to think of it he could have become a front page spread eagle.
If success is newsworthy then even inglorious British failure is more so. The press not famed for its generosity of spirit has conjured a career in minor celebrity for this and I'm sure many other unlikely heros.
Good on them. There's many an orthopaedic surgeon who'll raise a glass to their contribution in medical fees alone. See Evil Kineval for details
