Welcome to the Admissions Office for the University of Life.

We're looking for volunteers to become special project Field Researchers within the University. If you haven't already, read the Field Researchers' Home Page to find out all about the scheme.

We all have the knowledge to contribute a few pages on our area or areas of special interest. Your completed project will be featured on the Reading About the Guide page, and will be categorised within the Edited Guide.

How to Become a University Field Researcher

Does this sound like the kind of scheme that you would be interested in joining? If so, here's how to get involved.

First you have to create an h2g2 entry entitled 'Project: XXXXX', where 'XXXXX' is the title of your project. This entry is your project's index page. You can find an example of an index page here - please copy the layout of this example. You can get to the GuideML for this entry here.

Next, start a new Conversation at the bottom of the University Admissions Office (this page) containing the following information:

  • Your h2g2 name.

  • Your h2g2 Researcher number (eg U123456).

  • The page number (eg A123456) of your completed index page.

  • The project title.

  • A description of the general subject that you'd like to cover.

  • Specific areas that you intend to cover within this subject. You can expand on this, or change your mind as you progress; this is just to ensure that there's no duplication of effort.

  • The proposed entry titles that make up the project. List as many as you feel capable of achieving within six weeks, and don't feel pressurised to overdo it, as this is supposed to be fun!

  • Your proposed start date.

  • Your proposed finish date. This should be six weeks after the proposed start date1.

Once you've done this, we'll confirm that you've been allocated the project and we'll add your name to the appropriate faculty page.

When you've completed the project please let us know here again, and we'll give you plenty of feedback. It will then be passed over to the in-house Editorial team for approval, before being published.

Thanks for volunteering!

Other Schemes

Don't forget that there are five volunteer schemes in total - pick the one that's right for you!

  • The Scouts run the Peer Review scheme and pick the best entries that come through it, ready for the Sub-editors.

  • The Sub-editors take the recommended entries from the Scouts and turn them into beautiful, flowing prose, for inclusion in the Edited Guide.

  • The Aces are the upstanding members of the h2g2 Community, greeting new Researchers, helping to keep everyone happy, and generally being wonderful people.

  • The Gurus help to run the Feedback areas, answering any questions people might have about h2g2.

  • The visually creative and marvellously talented Community Artists illustrate entries, design new smileys and generally bring beauty and glamour to h2g2.

1We will extend the time period, if necessary, please just let us know.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
