Good manners would have to be a meme. They are most definitely passed down through the generations. My daughter has taught herself - I think I set a good example but never actually told her to be polite. Imagine a little tot, barely walking and talking but saying "fankyou", "bless you" and "sowwee" at the appropriate times. A year or so later she still isn't really good with please but I don't mind.
