A Conversation for Great International Breakfast Dishes
Gallo Pinto

I spent two years getting used to this and now I never have it. I lived in Costa Rica for two years but grew up in the U.S. with traditional breakfasts (pancakes, french toast, oatmeal, cold cereal, toast, etc.). While in Costa Rica I was introduced to Gallo Pinto. A bit ironically, gallo pinto is made up of the same stuff that makes up all of the meals in Costa Rica: beans and rice. With the addition of a little seasoning, the beans and rice are mixed up and fried. Very few breakfasts compare to a hearty meal of gallo pinto accompanied with hot chocolate or agua dulce (water with processed sugar cane).
