Literary Corner: Thimble Theatre

Thimble Theatre

Willie Wormwood throws Olive Oyl over a cliff. Harold Hamgravy calls, give me a little time and I'll save you. 80 years later, his beard has grown so long that Olive can catch hold of it. Harold says, I save you, now you shave me.

About a hundred years ago, comics were sometimes more interesting than they are now. They weren't only about memes and references and 'relatable' sentiments. They even got downright surreal in places. EC Segar was a popular cartoonist: before he introduced Popeye the Sailor, the Oyl family – Olive, her brother Castor, her father Cole, her mother Nana, and her nieces Deezil and Violet, had many adventures with her boyfriend Harold Hamgravy, Wimpy the hamburger moocher, and others.
